The Polk Audio SurroundBar 50 is 51″ wide to offer an enveloping surround sound experience to anyone who wants better sound from their TV but does not want to install rear-mounted speakers. It delivers surround sound from a single, multi-driver loudspeaker located under or over the TV screen using SDA Surround technology. SDA Surround technology uses a patented combination of signal processing and acoustical geometry that complements the spacing between your ears to produce surround sound without the need for rear mounted speakers. It can deliver a room-filling surround experience in nearly any location in almost any type of room with no special room characteristics required. The SurroundBar 50 is sized to match the width of 50″ Plasma and LCD TVs. In addition to using SDA Surround technology on the surround channels, the SurroundBar 50 adds SDA Surround image enhancing technology on the front Left & Right channels to further enhance the surround experience as well as produce a huge stereo sound field from a two-channel source. New drivers and crossover design along with a larger enclosure produce far better bass performance than the original SurroundBar. The aluminum enclosure houses nine mid/bass drivers with Neodymium magnets, three dome tweeters and a four-PC board crossover with over 60 components.

I urge EVERYONE to read this before even CONSIDERING purchasing from Electronics Expo. I placed an order on Dec 13 with an estimated delivery b/t Dec 18-23. It is now Dec 29 and still not in my possession. Electronics Expo single-handedly ruined Christmas, and their customer service was completely rude and offered NO help. Please do not waste your time or money purchasing from these frauds.

I bought this item as a Gold Box deal, which is currently the same price the item is offering now. Buyer beware that you absolutely positively need a receiver for this product. I think the language in the description could have made that a little bit more clear. After all, it is a sound bar. If you have a receiver, then pick this item up! At around $400, it’s a great price for a Polk product! Otherwise, consider the Polk Surroundbar 360, which is more expensive, but comes with it’s own type of receiver. Enjoy the new sounds!

The Surround 50 bar by Polk provides little or no surround sound. I installed it with my Pioneer Elite Receiver and a Polk sub-woofer. All sound seemed to come from the sound bar. I then played the same movie with individual Polk surround speakers. They provided true 5.1 sound. I am returning the bar to Electronic Expo as a result.

I’ve got this SurroundBar 50 hooked up to a Sony mid-range receiver, a Polk PSW111 sub, and a Sharp 52″ LCD in a cathedral ceiling, trapezoidal room. Basically this was the only thing that would work. The overall effect is very good and I’m happy with the piece. It’s not insignificant to me that this is a very attractive piece of A/V equipment, with easy hookup and three mounting options out of the box. I’ve got it on very small feet and it looks great.
As far as sound, for movies and TV it works well, though make no mistake that there’s no way anything sounds like it’s coming from behind you. However, I have heard sounds from beside me, which was a cool feeling. I’ve experienced a few times where the center channel of speech gets a little lost, but that’s happened less with this SurroundBar than with other multi-piece systems I’ve had.
The bottom line is that, despite sometimes being slightly on the bright side, the overall sound from this bar matched with the PSW111 is very good. My dad is a professional classical musician and commented that the system playing digital cable music was exceptional–that says a lot.

Never thought I would like a single speaker surround solution. Unfortunately the wife’s opinions on interior design made finding one a necessity. Not surprising, Polk Audio delivers once again. What a great speaker company!
